Roland Garros 2018 Thoughts

Nadal on a quest to capturing his 11th French Open Crown, giving him his 17th major. The man is an absolute beast on clay going 105-2 in best of 5 set matches on the dirt, and who can stop him this year? 4 days into the event and we have already seen some epic clashes. Zverev looked like his grand slam woes would continue today as he was pushed to 5 sets by Dusan Lajovic, ranked 60 in the world. Lajovic is a strong baseliner who moves extremely well and has tremendous variety from the backhand corner, mixing in slice with drop shots and was hitting the ball crisply from both corners, troubling Zverev who looked tentative out there. However, he recovered in time and showed his quality coming back from 2 sets down, winning the last two sets 6-1 6-2. Im sure avid tennis fans know that Nishikori and Dimitrov were also pushed to 5 sets, both facing tremendous in-form players Donaldson and Benoit Paire. Hopefully, it isn’t becoming a trend for players in the lost generation(Raonic, Dimitrov, Nishikori, Pouille, Thiem) to be playing 5 sets over and over in the early rounds. We want to see them breakthrough at the slam level and make deep runs consistently, which I dont believe is true. Nonetheless, the bottom half of the draw with a Djokovic, Zverev, Thiem, Nishikori, and other floaters is getting quite exciting. Here are my predictions of the bracket from tennis channel on both the mens and the womens side. I am doing fairly well in Men’s and on the ladies side there have been some upsets, most notably Venus Williams. In future grand slams I encourage you all to participate in these racket bracket competitions to try and predict how the tournament unfolds. It is quote challenging. You can comment on my picks and I will continue with more analysis as the tournament goes on.
