Roger Federer got his bid to a seventh ATP world tour finals title off to a great start overcoming the confident American Jack Sock. He won the match 6-4 7-6. In the first set, Federer was off to a start in a flourish breaking in the first game with his trademark backhand down the line, a shot that has defined this season. In the seventh game of the set, Federer missed an easy sitter forehand in a very very funny and humbling moment in one of the easiest shots I’ve ever seen him miss. Video below:

In the second set, after some challenging moments, federer eventually won in a tiebreak. He was rock solid on his won serve, and gave himself plenty of opportunities to break the Sock serve. Jack sock is a dangerous opponent who was serving incredibly well himself, setting up shots with his ferocious forehand well. Federer will only get even better, as he is the clear cut favorite for the title. This was his 50th match win for the season, a season where he has only lost 4 matches.

In the other semifinal: Zverev game back from a break down in the third set to defeat Marin Cilic in his first time debut at the ATP finals. It was a close contest, with Zverev playing some of his best tennis towards the end.

Here were today’s highlights of both matches:

Tomorrow in Group B :
Nadal vs. Goffin (Nadal may not be 100% fit with his knees)
Thiem vs. Dimitrov
